Sustainable development has become a new modern science. To keep up with the global trend, the Department of Accounting and Information Technology of CCU and the Manufacturer Integration Research Center signed a letter of intent for ESG industry-university cooperation with SGS Taiwan Inspection Technology Co., Ltd. on the 23rd. In the future, the two parties will not only promote course cooperation and industry-university mutual assistance for sustainable development goals (SDGs) and greenhouse gas inventory issues but also jointly cultivate local talents for green auditing and promote Taiwanese enterprises and society to attach importance to the green economy and sustainable investment (ESG).
Today, Zhen-Hui Wu, director of the Department of Accounting and Information Technology, Shi-Ming Huang, director of the manufacturer integration center, and Bai-Yu Bao, deputy general manager of the knowledge and management business group of SGS, signed a cooperation agreement. The Department of Accounting and Information Technology of CCU stated that SGS has more than 25 years of experience in sustainable services. It has won the DJSI Gold Award in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index and the GCSA Global Sustainability Award which is the largest international carbon management verification agency in the fields of footprint and carbon neutrality for two consecutive years.
In this signing, the two parties hope to introduce practical experience in the industry through the courses so that teachers and students can understand carbon footprint calculations, obtain qualifications and capabilities for verification through practical exercises, guide the industry, and even use industry-university cooperation to improve greenhouse gas emissions or conduct net-zero checks external verification work.
With the announcement of the sustainable development path by the Financial Supervisory Commission this year, listed companies need to conduct greenhouse gas inspections and verify information disclosure, and the government requires companies to provide product carbon footprints to achieve ESG indicators. The demand for greenhouse gas inspections is increasing day by day. Among the greenhouse gas management tools, "carbon footprint" is to help enterprises assess and manage the greenhouse gas emissions from raw materials, production, transportation, use, and final treatment of goods or services from a life cycle perspective.
Taiwan's industry has long been dominated by processing exports. High-efficiency output means that the design of production processes is related to the calculation of greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, clear greenhouse gas inspections (ISO 14064) and carbon footprint inspections (ISO 14067) will effectively improve the industry's net zero design. However, corporate social responsibility reports and annual reports to net zero emissions require professional functions and experience which also highlight the importance of cultivating relevant talents.
Zhen-Hui Wu said that the transition from traditional accounting to the integration of accounting into information technology has recently moved toward the goal of transformation and sustainable development. She emphasized that green auditing is an important part of future accounting development. As the first membership department in China to cultivate expertise in accounting and information technology, she hopes to continue to improve the professionalism of teachers and students through SGS industry-university cooperation capabilities and international competitiveness.
In recent years, climate change has continuously ranked first in risk assessment. Therefore, we must check the carbon footprint of products and the greenhouse gas emissions of enterprises to formulate effective strategies and management for net zero greenhouse gas emissions. Shi-Ming Huang pointed out that the CCU Bamboo Light Heating USR program has also conducted related courses recently, and 14 teachers and students of the membership department have participated in and passed the certification of "ISO 14067:2018 Carbon Footprint Standard Lead Auditor", becoming seed teacher training, and looking forward to introducing it in the future Campus and social education has developed into the teaching characteristics of CCU.
As a founding member of the Sustainable Low Carbon Alliance, SGS Taiwan Inspection Co., Ltd., Bai-Yu Bao said that global awareness of environmental protection has increased in recent years, and Taiwan has released a 2050 net-zero emission path. At present, the demand for greenhouse gas inventory courses is in short supply. Looking forward this cooperation can attract outstanding experts, scholars, and student teams to invest in the knowledge field of enterprise investigation. We also believe that through course development and training, more top talents will lead Taiwan towards the goal of net zero emissions.
