CCU President Tsai Shao-cheng said that the school is located near the fault zone and has always been concerned about seismic events and earthquake prevention issues. During the frequent earthquakes in early April this year, professors from the Department of Geo-Environmental Sciences were interviewed by the media several times to provide the public with professional knowledge and concepts of disaster prevention. In addition, CCU has a Southern Taiwan Earthquake Research Center, an Environmental and Disaster Monitoring Center, and an Earthquake Museum, which not only has sophisticated equipment for disaster research, but also has a large collection of Chiayi earthquake prevention and disaster prevention information. Cai Shaozheng pointed out that one of the sustainability projects provided by CCU is “Strengthening the Disaster Resilience of Chiayi City's Wooden Structures”, the goal of which is to protect Chiayi City's wooden cultural assets. The executive team will organize and analyze the data on wooden structures, set up a real-time monitoring system for intelligent disaster prevention, set up a database system, etc., and conduct an earthquake-resistant evaluation of the wooden structures in order to accurately grasp the state of the wooden buildings.
The Chiayi City Government said that the “Chiayi City and Six Schools Sustainable Practice Platform” is in line with the 17th United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs17), which is to establish multi-dimensional partnerships to jointly realize the vision of sustainability. The city government convened eight bureaus, including the Cultural Affairs Bureau, the Civil Affairs Bureau, the Social Affairs Bureau, the Construction Bureau, the Education Bureau, the Health Bureau, the Environmental Protection Bureau, and the Tourism and Information Bureau, and put forward a total of eight proposals in the areas of economic development, environmental protection, and social progress. The six tertiary institutions, on the other hand, integrated their R&D units, industry and academic units, and related institutes, and utilized the strengths of their talents, expertise, and creativity, and combined them with the needs of the local community to put forward a total of seven proposals in response to issues such as disaster prevention, health, and international issues. Through this platform, the city government and the universities have formed a close tripartite partnership between industry, government and academia, integrating academic specialties and municipal practices to promote more exchanges and interactions.
Chiayi City, as the center of the Yunjiajia Common Life Circle, is the first county and city in the Yunjiajia region to pass the Net Zero Emissions Sustainable Management Autonomy Ordinance. In addition to demonstrating that sustainability is an important concept in the city government's governance, it is also due to the fact that neighboring universities and colleges can serve as important think tanks for urban development, which will accelerate the promotion of sustainability and bring a new and fresh outlook on the development of the region. Mayor Huang Minhui called for the concern of sustainability issues should not have regional limitations, and no one is an outsider. Only through unity and cross-district joint promotion to promote the sustainable practice of the living area can we realize the vision of the region's common good.
