CCU Crime Research Center Survey: Satisfaction with Police Policing Rises Significantly

The Crime Research Center and Crime Prevention Department of National Chung Cheng University conducted a telephone interview survey on Taiwanese people’s satisfaction with justice and crime prevention throughout 2023. The survey shows that 88.8% of people are satisfied with the security near their homes, which is second only to the peak in 107 years. In surveys conducted over the past ten years, the satisfaction rate for this project has remained at around 80% to 90%, reflecting people's high confidence in the security situation near their homes.

The Zhongzheng Crime Research Center stated that public satisfaction with "police maintenance of public security" has increased significantly, with satisfaction levels reaching nearly 83% (82.86%), an increase of 9 percentage points compared to the previous survey. Such a positive upward trend reflects the public's high recognition of the police's work in maintaining public security. It also shows the effectiveness of the police in performing their duties and gaining the trust of the public.

In addition, 54.5% of the people expressed satisfaction with the "social safety net" measures. They have a positive evaluation of the government's strengthening of the social safety net, but there is still room for improvement. The Zhongzheng Crime Research Center mentioned that the public remains 33% satisfied with judges’ ability to resolve criminal cases fairly and impartially, and 70% satisfied with the national judge system. The positive evaluation of judges as being fair and impartial reached 33.2%, and the satisfaction rate has remained stable at 30% in the past three years. As for the national judge policy, public satisfaction reached 70%. It can be seen that the new policy provides the public with the opportunity to participate in the trial process, effectively improves confidence in the judicial system, and reduces distrust in the judiciary.

This year's public satisfaction with "the government's prevention of fraud crimes" was 37.62%, a new low in the past decade. Due to the use of wrong information in Cambodia and other places to lure Chinese people out of the country in the past 112 years and the recent rampant investment fraud, the public has been The government’s confidence in preventing fraud has decreased. In addition, nearly 90% of the people disapprove of the legalization of marijuana. This survey shows that 89.1% of the people oppose the legalization of marijuana, of which 66.9% "do not support the legalization of marijuana at all", showing that nearly 90% of the people oppose the legalization of marijuana. 90% of the public do not support the legalization of marijuana.

The recent major criminal cases involving students on campus have had a profound impact on the public and caused concerns about campus security. In the second half of 2012, the policy of "vehicles and motorcycles giving way to pedestrians on sidewalks" was implemented, and 64.4% of the people surveyed were satisfied with the policy, which reflects the general public support for the pedestrian safety measures guaranteed by the policy.

This year's survey of the public on whether they support the abolition of the death penalty showed that 62.7% of the people "do not support the abolition of the death penalty at all", reaching a record high. Followed by the proportion of "Basically not in favor of abolition of the death penalty, but willing to consider supporting measures if there are supporting measures" is 23.1%. It can be seen that 85.83% of the majority of Taiwanese people do not support the issue of abolition of the death penalty.
