The Center for Liberal Studies of National Chung Cheng University (CCU) held the “Laboratory for Sustainable Cultivation of Talents and Entrepreneurship in an Elderly Society” unveiling ceremony on the 24th, where experts from the government, industry, and academia who are concerned with the issues of aging and sustainable development gathered to witness the new milestones that CCU has set for the sustainable development of talents and entrepreneurship in an aging society.
President Tsai Shao-cheng pointed out that the Center for Liberal Studies is a platform for the university's cross-disciplinary integration and the application of academic achievements in community and industrial practice, and the achievements of industry and academia provide references for the government to formulate policies. The Laboratory of Sustainable Cultivation and Entrepreneurship for Elderly Social Talents, with adult education as its core, has set up three main axes, namely, the sustainable development of retired manpower, community-based social enterprises, and the sustainable development of carbon reduction.
Director of the Center for Liberal Studies, Ms. Yah-Huei Lee, said that in the past few years, based on the cooperation and practical experience with industry expert, Mr. Yo-Jae Chang, the chairman of the Farmers' Workshop Development Association, a number of successful cases have been coached. The sustainable development of talent in an aging society begins with pre-retirement preparation, and through entrepreneurial training and counseling to help retirees find career interests and entrepreneurial direction, for example, Mr. Chen Cheng-hsien, who retired as an instructor from the county police department, opened the Wild Bamboo Enterprise after attending the coffee entrepreneurship training, and every day he lives to make and sell coffee, and make friends and have extra income.
In addition, Ms. Chen Ziyuan, who retired from the public sector and started farming, found joy in her retirement life by successfully growing less sweet dragon fruits according to the dietary habits of middle-aged and elderly retirees. Ms. Lee explained that adults should give full play to the value of their lives at all ages, and even elders at the point of dementia care can develop their expertise. As for the direction of counseling for the sustainable development of retired manpower, the needs of an aging society can be used for precision production and marketing of agricultural products, which can achieve good results in entrepreneurship.
The chairman of the board of directors, Mr. Chang You-jae, is familiar with the cooking technique of shallow pickling from the demented elders and pickles the mustard greens that are abundant in the area. The “Mustard Happiness, Happiness for All” program is practiced at the Co-Level Dementia Care Center in Hai-Win Village, Hsingang Township, Chiayi County, where demented elders are allowed to develop their specialties, transforming the long term care center for demented elders into a community-based enterprise, and fostering the creation of an aging rural village.
When it comes to carbon reduction, Ms. Lee says it is a highly discussed topic, but there is no specific strategy or direction on how to do it. Ms. Lee coached King Kong Pollution Prevention Co., Ltd. to upgrade from carbon rights to carbon pricing, and used adult education theories to design product descriptions to educate consumers in a simple, concrete and easy-to-understand way. The Chairman of the Board of Directors, Mr. Cheung Yau Chai, provided practical operational strategies, i.e., without changing any conditions, by adjusting the packaging material and switching from plastic packaging to plastic-reducing material packaging, carbon reduction can be achieved and carbon rights can be owned to achieve the goal of carbon reduction and assist enterprises to advance from carbon rights to the goal of “Carbon is Valuable”.
The Center for Liberal Studies said that the establishment of the laboratory is the starting point for fostering the sustainable development of talents in an aging society. In the future, it will integrate the research and social practice energies of all faculty members and students of the university and continue to research and develop and promote high-quality programs and products, so as to achieve the function of fulfilling the university's social responsibility.
